Splice Internet enters nbn® market

Gippsland internet provider Splice Internet – the retail arm of the Rural Fibre Co Group – will enter the nbn® market from mid-November.

Splice founder Phillip Britt announced the news today at the CommsDay Wholesale Conference in Sydney, saying the company would launch with plans from $85 a month and a Black Friday offer for new customers.

Splice is currently the only retailer to offer plans on Rural Fibre Co’s wholesale network throughout the Latrobe Valley.

Phil announced that Splice would start selling fibre-only nbn® services on both the Traralgon and Cranbourne POIs, offering what he believes are some significant points of difference to other retailers.

“As part of delivering services on the Rural Fibre Co network, we’ve built a retail experience that we believe is well ahead of most others,” said Phil.

“We’ve been able to build an ISP from the ground up in only 18 months, embedding knowledge from past experience, but also bringing fresh eyes and AI smarts to the table.

“Launching into the nbn® market – even on a small footprint – allows us to bring that experience to more customers.

“It also helps us to scale, so we can plough more resources back into customer experiences and keep prices low.”

Three plans, each with a Boosted option

Phil said the Splice nbn® range would be built around three main plans: Everyday Streamers (500/50 Mbps) at $85 a month, Family Fast (1000/100 Mbps) at $109 a month and Maxxed Out (2000/200 Mbps) at $189 a month. Each plan also comes in a Boosted version with faster upload speeds for an extra $30 a month.

The company is offering special deals for the Black Friday period as a thank-you to early adopters. “We’re expecting a lot of interest around Traralgon, and this is our way of saying thanks to the people who give us a go,” said Phil. “It’s also the start of our new campaign, ‘Splice, a bit more local’, which is really what we’re about.”

An app from day one

The launch marks a major step forward for the regional telco, and will be accompanied by a brand-new website, app and streamlined sign-up flow.

Phil said a significant focus for the Splice team has been thinking about the customer experience from the ground up.

“We’ve looked at the digital flows across telco and worked hard to strip out the unnecessary and confusing parts of managing a service.

“For instance, it would be very rare for a regional telco to launch with its own app from day one of nbn® service.”

Phil said customers can use the app to sign up, pay by Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayTo, manage multiple services and call the Splice team directly.

“Smaller providers usually give you a web portal and a phone number. We wanted customers to have everything in their pocket from the moment they sign up,” said Phil.

“This is just the starting point. We’ll keep listening to customers and improving the experience every month, rather than waiting for the industry to push us to change.

“We’ve never been good at doing things the way they’ve always been done.

“We built our own fibre network because nobody else was going to build it out here in Gippsland, and we’ve built our own retail service provider, Splice, to make sure our customers really have the best possible experience from connection to support.

“nbn® is a chance to take that same approach to another network.”

The announcement tops a big year for the Rural Fibre Co Group, which is now building residential fibre into its fifth location in the Latrobe Valley, and has started work on its recently announced 90 Mile Loop commercial fibre path through Gippsland.

“Being small isn’t an excuse to do less,” said Phil. “We see it as the main reason we can do things differently and move at serious speed.”
